Friendsgiving
I am just going to start this off by saying I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS and there is one thing I love more than the holidays, and that is hosting small get togethers of sorts. This weekend I hosted my very first friendsgiving and I was very excited about it, even with working 45 hour weeks! Im the kind of person who is always over the top and has very extravagant plans for things and I try my very best to execute them. For the most part I am able to achieve my goal. Lucky for me, my roommate Tara is exactly the same.
We had a very large menu consisting of obviously a turkey and all the usual Thanksgiving sides, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, cheesy cauliflower, gravy, maple glazed carrots and sweet potatoes, sautéed brussel sprouts and asparagus with bacon, mac and cheese, and of course some rolls! I have never been the biggest fan of Thanksgiving food, but of course I love any excuse to throw a party and cook. On the other hand, Thanksgiving is Tara's favorite and she insisted on making most of the food so Tara picked all the foods and we cooked most of it up the night before, which was all my idea because Tara is not a planner. We had really cute appetizers that we also prepped the night before! A cute cheese plate and pigs in a blanket!
I was also really excited about the decorations. I love the cute boho rustic look, but not too boho because I hate for things to look messy. We had different shapes and sizes of mason jars that we shoved some fake leaves and fairy lights in and with the other put some fake sparkly twigs in. A couple of nights before Tara and I decided to stop by the goodwill next to our campus and grab some wine glasses because there were going to be 15 of us, which is a lot of food and drink, especially for an over indulgent day like friendsgiving. We found some super cute stuff at goodwill, and I LOVED the fact that we found wine glasses of all shapes and sizes. We also found some cute tall candles, and platters. The one we served our cheese plate on was a vintage turkey carving board! It has all these cute illustrations and cooking times for the turkey! IT WAS A FREAKING STEAL! We walked out of goodwill with 15 wine glasses, two tall candles and two serving platters all for $13.
We had people over while we were still getting all the food ready, which wasn't the original plan, but it was nice because there was a little hustle and bustle and friends in the kitchen that helped so I had to be a little less of a control freak. My other roommate Matt was a little help and did the beer, which was very important. He just lives here and participated for the food is my guess. All in all I think it went great. Ive hosted dinner parties before, but never this big and I'm pretty proud of how it went and looked. It was a little stressful at times but completely worth it!
I think next year I want to do something a little different, no matter where I'm living. I want it to be more of a potluck style dinner. I just recently read an article saying that millennials are changing the traditions of Thanksgiving and even changing the traditional foods. They used turkey as an example, so instead of making a whole turkey and stuffing, they make just turkey legs and a very boujee green bean and mushroom bread pudding that still looks great in pictures. This idea does not sound too bad to me, it actually sounds right up my alley. Although it is not traditional, it is still fun and festive and that is what I'm here for!
I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!
